Luke 1:76 "And you, my little son, will be called a prophet of the Most High..."
Some of the sweetest times in my life have been during my pregnancies and also the period of time afterwards when I had a newborn baby to care for. I felt so alive and in awe of God in those special times. It is as if I was able to see with a new set of eyes and hear with new ears, both the face and the voice of the Lord. I can remember how passionate I was even before my pregnancies, that the news of having a baby had to be met with joy and celebration and words of blessing. When each of our three children were still in utero, they were welcomed with joy, blessed with words of affirmation, and prayed over by both Mark and I, though we had not yet seen them.
I think that Mary and Elizabeth, who are spoken of in the book of Luke as he tells the story of John the Baptist and Jesus' births, are two amazing women who also obviously experienced a special ability to know the touch of God during their pregnancies. They were in fact so tuned in to hear God's voice that they not only responded to Him wholeheartedly, but they also spoke on Gods behalf. There was one other voice who spoke God's words during this time, and that was Zechariah, John the Baptist's father. The key in all of this was that they were proclaiming a prophetic word over their children regarding how God would one day use them.
I understand that John the Baptist and Jesus were pretty special people and the entire world history would be shaped by their lives, but I also believe that our very own children carry a special place in the heart of God and are meant to be a part of a divine plan to also impact this planet. What could happen if we as mothers, fathers, and grandparents tune in to what God is saying over these young lives and announce it as a prophetic word over them?
Just like Zechariah saying, "And you, my little son, will be called a prophet of the Most High" what are the things God want us to tell our little ones, our preteens, and our young people? May I encourage you today, to allow the miracle of new life and motherhood, fatherhood, or even being a grandparent, to cause you to hear the voice of God so clearly as to speak into their future, the plans of God. These words are more important than a mere emotional response, but they are words themselves birthed in the heart of God and He is looking for them to be spoken over the precious lives of our children.
If you are far removed from this stage of life, don't let it become old to you. Read the story Luke tells of how significant the pregnancies and births of John and Jesus were, and understand the significance of not only our own children or grandchildren, but also those not yet born. Pray into their future. Tune in to hearing the voice of God regarding their destiny in God. I believe that as we do, we will be used by God to speak as Mary, Elizabeth, and Zechariah did and thereby brought about God's intentions. As you do this, thank God for allowing you to be the one He's placed in the exact spot to speak on His behalf into the life of a little child of His!
